[FRESNO COUNTY, Calif.] – The Fresno County Transportation Authority (FCTA) Board has approved $6 million in Measure C Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program, funding agreements with the County of Fresno and the Cities of Fowler, Mendota, Parlier, Reedley, Sanger, and Selma – securing investments in pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements near schools across the county.

The SRTS program was established following the FCTA Board’s approval of Amendment No. 9 to the 2006 Measure C Expenditure Plan at its June 18, 2025 meeting, directing meaningful dollars toward improvements that enhance safety near and around schools.

With a project limit of $1.5 million, the SRTS program prioritizes bicycle and pedestrian-friendly projects within one-half mile of a school site and is available exclusively to rural jurisdictions and the County of Fresno. A call for projects opened on July 11, 2025, and was extended to October 14, 2025. Fresno COG received 18 applications totaling more than $17 million in requests – nearly three times the available funding – underscoring the significant demand for school safety improvements across the county.

During the April 8, 2026 FCTA Board meeting, funding was approved for seven projects collectively serving 20 schools. More than half of the funded projects involve pavement installation, upgrading dirt pathways that students currently use to reach school. The approved projects and funding amounts are as follows:

  • City of Selma: Rose Avenue and Olive Avenue Crosswalks – $644,800
  • City of Parlier: Madsen Avenue SAFE Projects – $906,588
  • City of Sanger: Fowler Switch Canal Pedestrian Bridge – $906,588
  • City of Reedley: T.L. Reed Safe Routes to School Project – $906,587
  • City of Fowler: Safe Routes to School Project – $906,587
  • City of Mendota: SRTRS Master Plan Implementation – $906,587
  • County of Fresno: Cantua Elementary Pedestrian Pathway – $822,263

“This investment was made possible by Measure C, reflecting our commitment to making our communities safer for the students and families who depend on these routes every day,” said Lynne Ashbeck, chair of the Fresno County Transportation Authority. “Every day, students and families in our communities rely on these pathways to get to school, work, and essential destinations. By funding projects like this, we’re helping to create safer, more reliable connections that improve quality of life across Fresno County.”
